2013 MS Ride the Vortex – May 18-19 2013

Posted by on May 20, 2013

THANKS to my sponsors, Jeff P, John F, Theresa J, Rosemary C, Wally H, Jim and Sue F, and Jose V for helping me raise $350 to participate in the MS Ride the Vortex on May 18-19 in Cottonwood and Sedona, AZ. The over 800 participating bicyclists raised over $400,000 thanks to generous sponsors like mine! These funds will go a long way for the National MS Society to help with research, advocate for change, and help people with MS and their families.

2013 Ride the Vortex - in Sedona

2013 Ride the Vortex – in Sedona

For those interested in the details of my ride, it was two days. The numbers are – Day 1 – 91 miles, 16.7mph average, 5 hours 34 minutes of elapsed time and 5,154’ of altitude gain. Day 2 was 49 miles, 17.7mph average, 2 hours 38 minutes of elapsed time and 2,339’ of altitude gain. Totals for 2 days – 8 hours and 12 minutes, 141 miles and 7,493’ of altitude gain.

The route for Day 1 took us from the start in Cottonwood through Cornville across Beaver Flats (not flat!) to the Village of Oak Creek with two side trips – up Jack’s Canyon and Verde Valley School Road – that took us into the Red Rock canyons. From the Village of Oak Creek we continued on to Sedona then out past the Enchantment Resort before retuning back to Sedona. Then we went out to Red Rock State Park on a loop before hitting 89 to head back into Cottonwood. It was beautiful scenery; when I was not too tired too look up, with MANY hills to climb and with a fierce headwind out to the Enchantment and down 89 to Cottonwood!

Day 2 started in Cottonwood and took us up 89 to Page Springs Road through the heart of AZ Wine country (and it is GOOD wine), then into Cornville, out to I-17 and back to Cottonwood. We continued up into Clarksdale past Tuzigoot National Monument ending back at Cottonwood. No wind for this day but tired legs on the many hills from the Day 1 efforts!

Next ride is MS Cape Cod Getaway on June 29th! THANKS to the donations of Bill & Carol S, Jim & Sue F, John F, Lisa Q, Mory B, Bobbie A, Patricia H,  Rosemary C and Wally H, I am very close to the amount needed for this ride!  THANKS sponsors.
