SAMPLE Custom Camp

Created for a small group of dedicated cyclists getting in the first camp of the year. This camp is designed to improve their fitness level and prepare them for the start of the season.

Day 1  – Warm up route in North Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Carefree. 45 miles 2,100′ elevation gain.

Day 2 – A relatively flat, fast and beautiful ride through Dove Valley, Anthem and New River. 62 miles 2,400′ elevation gain.

Day 3 – Time to start hitting the hills and ramp up the work on this route around the McDowell Mountains including Needle Rocks, Fountain Hills and Rio Verde. 64 miles 3,600′ elevation gain.

Day 4 – Now we have our climbing legs, we will do a set of 4 hill repeats on Cave Creek road after a Flemming Springs warm up.  The “towers” climbs is about 3-5 miles on each repeat with a 3%-6% grade.  69 miles 4,600′ elevation gain.

Day 5 – This is the big climbing day and we will do it in some of the best scenery around Phoenix. This ride takes us on 3 climbs, first in Cave Creek with a Flemming Springs warm up then up past our towers climbs of yesterday to 7 Springs before going down and up Bartlett Lake. A truly beautiful but hard day on the bike. 81 miles 7,000′ elevation gain.

Day 6 – More climbing today as we head out the Beeline to make a loop of beautiful Saguaro Lake and Usery Pass area.  75 miles 4,900′ elevation gain.

What can I customize?

The camp can range from 3-10 days in length and can be for up to 8-10 experienced cyclists. Bike rentals can be arranged or you can ship your own bikes. Local hotel accommodations and transportation can also be arranged as needed. This your camp, your way, just fill out the contact form below to get started!!

Where is the camp?

The camp is located in Scottsdale, Arizona near Sky Harbor airport. Camps can be arranged anytime starting March 1st and ending no later than May 20th. The weather in Scottsdale is GREAT for cycling during that time of the year and it will be a welcomed break from the cold winter. Our routes will vary from the scenic but rural areas around and near the McDowell and Superstition Mountains to downtown areas of Scottsdale and Phoenix.

Can you provide an example of the routes?

The final routes and associated workout focus for each day will be customized with you and for your group. Each day our routes will take about 3.5-4.5 hours of riding and if requested, sag support can also be provided.

Here a few of my favorite routes:

Carefree and around the McDowells

Gateway Trailhead to Bartlett Lake and Seven Springs

Fountain Hills Needle Rocks Loop

Camelback – Mummy Mountain to Fountains

A special excursion to one of the Top 10 rated climbs in the world, Mt Lemon near Tucson, can also be arranged. This is a great climb that is long, 30 miles one way, but mostly in the 6% range. The descent is the reward for the long climb up.
